This step-by-step Program Guide of Math Pentathlon Lessons is designed for Teachers and Coaches to prepare students to play the 5 Division II Math Pentathlon games as well as to become more skillful in participating in the related Academic Tournament. The Guide is organized into Monthly Lesson Plans with four Lessons per month for weekly implementation.
With a growing demand and use of the Math Pentathlon® Program many teachers and coaches have asked us for additional guidance in how to successfully implement this program. Our publication responds to this request by providing the Division III (4-5) Math Pentathlon Program Guide. This step-by-step Program Guide of Math Pentathlon Lessons prepares students to play the 5 Division III Math Pentathlon games as well as to become more skillful in participating in the related Academic Tournament. The Guide is organized into Monthly Lesson Plans with four Lessons per month for weekly implementation. The Mathematics Pentathlon Program is a compilation of three key resources: the Math Pentathlon Games and related Game Rule Manual, Adventures in Problem Solving Book II (Grades 4-7), and Investigation Exercises Book II (Grades 4-7). The Adventures in Problem Solving Book connects the Mathematics Pentathlon series of games and rule manual with important math content and process-related abilities. In addition, many introductory activities are suggested that develop prerequisite skills for being successful in playing the Mathematics Pentathlon games and developing related problem-solving strategies. The Investigation Exercises complements the Math Pentathlon games and Adventures in Problem Solving by providing problem-solving worksheets that help students develop higher-level thinking about the multiple strategies within each game. We have written The Guide for the Math Pentathlon Program to integrate this Program’s three key resources: the Games and Game Manual, Adventures in Problem Solving Book, and Investigation Exercises Book. Each Lesson describes necessary materials, approximate lesson time, resources with corresponding page numbers, and a summary of each activity with related illustrations. We have also included some example pages from Adventures in Problem Solving Book II and Investigations Exercises Binder II. In the Lesson descriptions these pages are referred to as Attachments and are indicated in blue text. A Notes Section for each lesson is also included to allow coaches/teachers to add personal notes before, during or after teaching the lesson. For example, in Months 1 and 2 many of the lessons involve prerequisite activities from Adventures in Problem Solving as well as some assessments from Investigation Exercises. Basic or partial rules to certain games are also introduced. With each successive month additional lessons are presented to expand students’ knowledge of the games. Over several months this developmental teaching process helps students actively experience various math concepts, skills, and problem-solving strategies that progressively deepen their critical reasoning abilities.
