ACADEMIC TOURNAMENTS &
VOLUNTEER TRAINING

“Tournaments are real-life experiences that provide lessons in learning about oneself and other people. These lessons are in such areas as team support, standing up for oneself, logical legalistic argument, and most importantly, good sportsmanship. This has kept me involved in the program even though my youngest child has graduated from it.”
Laurie Dubin

Any student in grades K-7 who is proficient at the games and are familiar with many game strategies can test their problem-solving abilities with same grade level students from other schools at a National Mathematics Pentathlon Academic Tournament. If students wish to participate in a national competition, they need to be very knowledgeable of the procedures and rules which govern such competitions. These can be found in their official game rule manual.

VOLUNTEER TRAING for TOURNAMENTS (VOSs) - Adults serve as the necessary volunteer officials at each of the national tournaments. Parents and educators are encouraged to help officiate/supervise during game play. Each game played by two students is officiated by one adult supervisor trained at a Volunteer Officials' Session (VOS). VOSs are conducted in areas where national tournaments are held to help parents, teachers, and administrators become familiar with the details of volunteering at a National Mathematics Pentathlon Tournament.

NATIONAL MATHEMATICS PENTATHLON ACADEMIC TOURNAMENTS - To prepare students for this level of involvement, teachers, coaches and parents assist students in: learning all 5 games in their division of play (Division I is K & 1) (Division II is 2 & 3) (Division IIII is 4 & 5) (Division IV is 6 & 7), refining their game strategies, orienting them to the procedural and challenge rules within each game, and having them practice the games on a one-on-one basis. Students should utilize all opportunities for practice. Students and their families must formally register for a National Mathematics Pentathlon Academic Tournament and make arrangements to attend the tournament. At a national tournament each participant is matched with a different player for each of the five games in the appropriate division and grade level.

Registration may be conducted through the school or individually by a parent. Schools and parents can save money by registering online and registering early. If the school is organizing the registration process, then parents should coordinate with their school's Math Pentathlon coach.

MPNT (MATH PENTATHLON NATIONAL TEAMS) - Schools with a broad base of student participation have the additional opportunity to compete against other such schools by sending teams. The following criteria determines a team:

  • There must be a total of exactly 30 students.;
  • These students must involve exactly five (5) grade levels.;
  • Each grade level must be equally represented with three (3) girls and three (3) boys;
  • Detailed MPNT Math Pentathlon National Team Criteria & Form .

Team scores are compared at each national tournament site and trophies are awarded appropriately. Note: Schools who send teams often send many additional students to tournament, calling their entire contingent "the team."

OFFICIAL REGULATIONS - All national tournaments are organized and regulated by the Pentathlon Institute's staff. The Pentathlon Institute's trademarks, copyrights and service marks insure the cooperating school districts that the national tournament held in their area provides the same standards and excellence of tournament competition experienced in all other Pentathlon tournaments.
